Neither is "better" than the other; they're evaluated against different standards, and a couple strong in one is not automatically strong in the other.
Ballroom Couple: Standard & Latin at Competition Level
A featured ballroom couple performs full production shows in the ship's main theatre, covering Standard disciplines (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, Viennese Waltz) and Latin disciplines (Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Jive, Paso Doble) at professional competition or show-dance level. This role suits couples with a background in competitive ballroom or professional show-dance — the technique, partnership quality and sophisticated choreography built through years of competition training.
Salsa Duo: Latin Energy, Often With Acrobatics
A salsa duo brings high-energy Latin performance to production shows and Latin nights. Most cruise lines and major productions specifically request the acrobatic format — sometimes called an adagio salsa couple — which incorporates lifts, throws and acrobatic partnering on top of salsa technique. Non-acrobatic duos are still considered, but only at an exceptionally high level of pure salsa performance. This role suits performers with a background in Latin/salsa technique combined with partner acrobatics or adagio work.

Which One Fits You?
If your background is competitive ballroom or professional show-dance, the ballroom couple route plays to that training directly. If your strength is Latin performance with partner acrobatics — lifts, throws, adagio work — the salsa duo route is the better fit, and the acrobatic element significantly widens the range of productions open to you. Some performers are genuinely strong in both; in that case, apply for whichever role matches your most recent and strongest performance material.
